Bill splitting

Split the bills without anybody keeping a tally

One person pays the internet, another did the big shop, and a third still owes for last month. OctoFlat turns all of it into one number per person — and it is the same number on everybody’s phone.

Free on the App Store and on Google Play.

Bills are not all split the same way

A shared expense tracker that only divides by the number of people gets the rent right and nothing else. These are the splits a real household needs.

Evenly, by percent, by shares or by exact amounts

Rent three ways is even. A room twice the size of the other two is shares. A phone bill where one person went over their data is exact amounts. Pick the one that matches what happened and the balance follows from it.

When two people paid towards the same bill

One of you put down the deposit and the other paid the rest. That is one expense with two payers, not two expenses to be reconciled later, so the balance reflects what each of you actually handed over.

Line by line, off the receipt

A supermarket run is rarely one shared cost. Mark the items that were for the household, leave the ones that were yours, and the split comes out per line instead of per total.

Photograph the receipt and let it do the maths

Take a photo at the till. The line items come off it — tax, tip and fees included — and all you do is mark which ones were shared. What you get is a correctly split expense with the original image attached, which is also the answer when somebody asks in March what that total covered. The free plan includes one scan a month, a rewarded ad adds another, and Premium carries a hundred.

The split is already made by the time you look at it.

What this looks like in a real week

The flat’s utilities

Electricity, water and internet arrive on three different dates in three different names. Each one goes in once as a recurring expense and turns up already split every month, so nobody has to forward a PDF and ask for a transfer.

The big shop

Two of you go, one pays. Scan the receipt, mark the four things that were only for one person, and the rest divides. The photo stays attached to the expense, so the total is checkable rather than something to take on trust.

A weekend away

A house, a hire car, and six people paying for different parts of it. Keep it as its own household so it never mixes into the flat’s ledger, settle up when you are home, and leave it there as a record.

What the free plan covers

Unlimited members, unlimited households and every way of splitting, free. Manual expenses are capped at ten a day on the free plan — a rewarded ad adds three more and Premium removes the cap. Premium is bought once for the whole household rather than per person, so one member subscribing covers everybody.

Questions about splitting

Can one household split bills in more than one currency?

Yes. Every expense keeps the currency it was paid in, and balances are held per person and per currency rather than converted at a rate that would be wrong by the time anybody settled. You see what you owe in the currency you owe it in.

What happens if a bill was split wrongly?

Edit the expense. The payers, the shares and the method can all be changed afterwards and the expense re-splits itself — there is no need to delete it and enter it again.
